In the Philippines, Marcelito Pomoy is a well-known figure who rose to fame back in 2011 as the grand champion of “Pilipinas Got Talent”. Filipinos admired him for his unique talent as he is able to sing a ‘solo-duet’ wherein he sings both parts in a duet: one with a male voice in the lower register and the other with a female voice in falsetto.
But Marcelito truly surprised the judges and audience of “America’s Got Talent: The Champions” with this impressive performance of “The Prayer”, a duet popularized by Andrea Bocelli and Céline Dion.
In his VTR, Marcelito shares the struggles he experienced back when he was younger as he lived in the streets of the Philippines after getting separated from his family. In 2011, he joined “Pilipinas Got Talent” not just to showcase his unique talent but to also find his family.
Impressed by his amazing talent, the entire Philippines helped the young singer find his family – and they were present when he won as grand champion of the show.
Fast forward to nearly a decade later, Marcelito upgraded to a bigger stage after he was invited to represent the Philippines on “The Champions” edition of “America’s Got Talent”.
Just as Filipino fans expected, Marcelito shocked everyone when he started singing in falsetto.
“That’s his voice?” Howie Mandel asked, unable to contain his surprise over Marcelito’s voice.
But Marcelito was not done surprising them yet. After doing the female part with grace, he sang the male part beautifully – and this gained him a standing ovation from the audience as with most of the judges. The audience just can’t get enough of Marcelito’s talent as he swiftly yet effortlessly switched from one voice to another throughout the song.
While Simon Cowell didn’t stand up, he told Marcelito that he gets a “10” score which means perfect! Simon even urged Howie to push the golden buzzer, but the latter did not do it as he feels it was still “too early” in the day.
Even if he didn’t get the golden buzzer, Marcelito still made it to the semi-finals, thanks to the votes from the superfans.
